My Guardian Angel

My Guardian Angel

I've always believed that I have a guardian angel hovering above me during my everyday life, watching over me to make sure that no mishaps or disasters fall upon me... ...

Two days ago, i was supposed to radiograph (read: x-ray) a horse. However, before i proceeded to to what i was supposed to do, someone pointed out to me that i wasn't wearing my radiology badge (which supposedly measures the amount of radiation you're receiving and will hence act as an alarm, figuratively speaking, if the amount exceeds the hazardous limit). There is a shelf in the x-ray room which houses all the students' and staffs' badges, and i immediately went there to retrieve my badge.

To my horror, my badge was missing. (For your information, a missing badge will cost me a replacement fee of $50. )I searched everywhere and went around staring at everyone's chest (we usually clip our badges on our breast pocket), trying to catch some muddle-headed student who has mistaken my badge for his/her own.

The search was futile. I couldn't proceed with the x-ray and so S (one of my equine lecturers) offered to do it for me.

About 1 minute later, she was on the ground, recumbent. I could hear her whispering, "Help me....." beneath her gasping breath. She was kicked by the horse, right smack in the knee.

I witnessed the whole accident. The red laser emitted from the machine. The x-ray cassette behind the horse's hock. The warning neigh followed by that merciless kick.

"Call the ambulance!" was all i could manage. I could hear the shakiness in my voice, and the thumping of my heart in my chest.

There was chaos in the whole room. Everyone was rushing around, trying to find sponges and pillows to prop her leg up. Someone returned with a handful of ice packs. There was talking - "What happened?" There was whispering - "She got kicked...got kicked."

And there i stood, totally dumbfounded. The person lying on the ground in agony could have been me......but somehow i had a lucky escape. Somehow i just did.

The ambulance came after awhile and S was sent to the nearest hospital. The last i heard, she had a fracture in the knee and needed surgery that very night.

The most spooky thing about this whole incident was the missing radiology badge. Later that afternoon, i went to speak to one of the senior radiographers to report the loss. When she saw me, she eyed me in a funny manner and said, "Oh, your badge is on my table......"

Following that, she explained to me that apparently this morning, "someone" (she wasn't even sure who that person was) had told her that i had withdrawn from the course a few days ago and hence she took the badge from the shelf, thinking that it wasn't needed anymore.

I was stumped.

Who exactly is that "someone" who made such a ridiculous claim about me? I tried asking around, hoping that it was one of my coursemates that had played a prank on me, but i didn't get a satisfying answer from anyone.

BUT one thing for sure, that "someone" had been my guardian angel for the day and saved me from a disaster......
