Holier Than Thou
It's not a good day. I brought the cats down to have their blood tested. 18-year-old Sophie for her general health profile, and Tutti for her FIV/FeLV check. I suspected Tutti's immune system to be screwed up one way or another, because she never got well from her cat flu and diarrhoea, no matter how much medical attention i gave her.
I'm worried about Sophie contracting it, and more worried about the other cats in the cattery that lived with Tutti before i adopted her. I smsed B, who had facilitated the adoption, just to warn them about the potential spread of disease among Tutti's other bunkmates. I also mentioned my dilemma in keeping Sophie and Tutti together.
The vibe that i got from her is that i am just a kiasi and unfeeling owner. It's true i fear for Sophie's well-being, she being a geriatric and having her own health issues. But i never thought of returning Tutti, much less abandoning her. I've loved and taken good care of her ever since she came to my home. If i had a choice, i'd want both of them to be safe and sound.
Apparently, a new kitten is going to a home where the owners have an FIV-positive cat. To them, these are the real animal lovers because they don't discriminate and "don't wanna think about the disease spreading".
HELLO? Don't mind me, but i think being delusional is PLAIN IRRESPONSIBLE.
I suggested screening the other kittens that lived with Tutti, should their new homes be multi-cat households. But the same claims were made about how "they will just love the animals and let them live and be happy, and even if one cat was sick, they won't discriminate it and separate the healthy cats from them".
That is so fucking not the point, CCB.
Although she didn't say it outright, i could feel that she was making insinuations about me being a bad owner and not being a BIG enough animal lover compared to them, just because i had qualms about keeping both cats together? So what? Does it make me an animal lover if i choose to ignore the fact that Sophie may potentially contract the disease from Tutti? How fair is that if YOU are Sophie?
I hate self-righteous people who have this holier-than-thou attitude. You really can just kiss my ass. Fools.

so does FIV spread by just living with the other cats? I mean, if it is really the case of being like HIV, then i think living with a FIV-positive cat is akin to having a HIV-positive person living with you, is it not?
Anyway, I am no vet expert. I guess sometimes people are just exasperated or something. They don't think too deeply and make their judgments too quickly. So do calm down! After a while, perhaps they will see the point you are trying to make.
Chill!

FIV is spread mainly by bite wounds and stuff. Sophie and Tutti do have really vicious fights sometimes! FeLV is spread by mere contact, grooming, sharing litter trays, sharing food etc, so yes it spreads by just living together!
I just hate the fact that they're so nonchalent about spreading the disease without qualms. With people, it's different cos we make choices out of our own free will. As pet lovers/owners, we make choices for our animals, so the choices should be sensible and responsible.
I've seen many FIV or FeLV +ve cats that suffer immensely (though not all do) and i've given advise so many times not to breed these animals or allow the spread, hence i hate the attitude of these people.
however weird it sounds, vets and animal lover extremist don't go well together! HAHA!

in the States, animal welfare groups who help rehome FIV/FeLV positive cats make sure they go to single-cat family. If that's not possible, they'd put the cat to sleep.
sounds really extreme, but i suppose their objective is to safeguard the health of all the other healthy animals.

i not nazi ah, maybe i used to be one....*erhem*, BUT you're not allowed to PUI me whatsoever! OKAY?
i suppose the job has thought me to be more objective and rational when it comes to issues like this. i'd still rehome FIV/FeLV cats to single-cat homes or at least separate them from healthy ones, NOT because i am discriminating, BUT because i am the mighty protector of all cats! wahahahah!
