Name Calling
I was just having an idle chat with Becky yesterday and our conversation drifted to the retro cartoon, M.A.S.K. We started throwing out names of the various cool vehicles - raven, condor, rhino, thunderhawk (I heart Matt Trakker!) etc. When Becky mentioned V.E.N.O.M (the baddies), I suddenly thought that "Venom" would make a good name for a dog.
I swear I'd get a mean-looking Rottweiler or Belgian Shepherd (or one of those mongrels with a menacing look) next time and name it Venom. Or Blade. Or Razor. Or Razorblade. Cool huh?
I've always wanted a super-masculine dog but that idea somehow got threw out of the window when I got Chester. Chester just doesn't belong to the category of mean, teeth-baring dog, which is not such a bad thing i suppose. But don't be fooled by his warm and affectionate disposition because he can get mad too! In fact, I think Chester's character actually takes after mine. Like me, he is usually tolerant of all sorts of crap and bullshit but when provoked beyond his limit, it's usually straight into BITE mode. We both don't believe in barking to warn others that we're about to retaliate!
Like mistress like dog, they say! But i must admit Chester's hair looks more well-maintained than mine! Haha.
When we first got Chester, we had a whole list of names to choose from:
1) Winter - because it was winter at that time.
2) Evo - after Steve Vai's precious axe and his evolution pickup.
3) Evol - alternate version of Evo, and when spelt back to front = love
4) Nova and some others I can't remember.
I was adamant about choosing a cool name (to me la!) like Thunder, Breeze, Storm etc. that had some reference to speed. After all, Border Collies were best known for being manic, ball-chasing Ferraris. In the local Border Collie scene, there was already a Blue Storm and a Black Diamond. How cool is it if Chester had been named Red Blaze?!
Anyway, Chester was named Chester because Dan was looking at some book which had the name of some county/city/or whatever in the States, which incidentally was Chester. So there, my red and white Border Collie puppy was thus christened. We both thought he looked like a Chester, whatever a 'Chester' is supposed to look like!
And no, we didn't name him Chester because he's brown and resembles a Chestnut. DUH.
This whole name thing is really intriguing. I'd really love to know how everyone else's pet was named! I'll write about how Cocoa was named, but some other time perhaps.
For now, some cute pictures of my favouritest dog in the world!

oh you know, his eyes are like blue husky-like when he's young? Or is it the lighting. That's pretty cool. And yeah! I know this border collie who is named maximillian black diamond or something. Doesnt it sound grand? Sometimes I call Toto - Toto Lai Ah Gou. How's that for crudeness? Ha ha.

yah chester had blue eyes when he was young! alot of people i met thought he was a red husky!
they turned sorted greenish later and they're now amber!
maximillion black diamond is a famous border collie! he's got a marking on his head like a diamond, i think! all the pedigree dogs with papers have really beautiful names. my collie that passed away was named something something lady summer.
SO how did Toto get his name? Tell!

Oh we adopted him from my mum's friend who couldn't stand a border collie's hyperactivity. So, at 6 months old, he already responded to the name Toto. I have no say in it. Although I must admit I am getting very very sick of people making 4d jokes...
THAT, and TOTO being a plumbing brand. Bleah. Man, why do all these dogs have such beautiful names! But then again, a rose by any name will smell as sweet. :)

HAHA! yeah i thought it's because of the Toto 4d thing!
My new cat was named Tutti (after an Indonesian maid) by the person who rescued her. She responds to that so i didn't change her name as well. My parents have problems remembering it and they keep calling her TeeToo (spider in Hokkein)!!!
But yes, a name is just a name. What's most important is we've got lovely pets!!

hi shannon, i've been reading your blog for about a yr now--mostly cos i love music, want to be a vet, and awww, chester! chester is damn cute la!
so i was wondering how come you quit being a vet. i'm afraid that i'm too idealistic, and that maybe being a vet isn't all about protecting and saving animals. cos i'm afraid that if i do eventually become a vet, it ends up tainted by stupid people who are more interested in money, or... i don't know. i'm rambling :S
Was working at MP fulfilling for you? Or was it very different from what you imagined it to be.
Hope these questions aren't too probing or rude :D

who're you, anonymous? christine? gwenda? (i remember a few people who emailed me regarding wanting to become a vet, but i can't exactly remember everyone!)
i suppose i am idealistic too, which explains why there are alot of conflicts at work. i mean, it's not anyone's fault but there were a lot of issues i had to deal with, being in a business and not a charity organisation.
i will take forever to talk about this!!!! i'll blog about it sometime later :)
Oh and fret not, i'm only quitting the place, definitely not quitting the job!

wow thanks! that wld be really great! :)
i'm one of those silent, and normally shy reader
(and fan of chester :D)
