Do It The Doggy Style!

Check this out!

I've been wanting to do this for eons but have always been bogged down by work during weekends when i was still in my previous job. But hey, now that i'm finally a free spirit during weekends, i finally got Chester signed up for doggy sports and agility classes!

Saturday evening was spent at this enclosed football field at Telok Blangah that took us forever to locate. Dan and I were like parents chaperoning our son for his first lesson and it was great to see so many Border Collies (and 3 Shelties, one of which has a snail in his hood) congregate to have fun. Erm, though i must admit that testosterone was raging among the males and we had to witness a few confrontations, one of which left me, the innocent bystander, with a sore chest. Chester got into a mild scuffle with a blue-merle BC (i say mild compared to the full-on snarling, growling, lunging, snapping between 2 of the other dogs), but we broke it up before it progressed to something more brutal. Proud daddy Dan was happy that his son exhibited some good ol' fighting spirit whereas paranoid mummy me was just worried about my son beating up other dogs.

I suddenly realised that my profession has made me lose trust in dogs, probably because i'm getting better at reading their body language and my senses are fine-tuned to detect brewing tension. Gone are the days where i can happily approach a dog with no apprehension (and get bitten, as experience has taught me). Maybe this isn't such a bad thing after all. And no, wagging tail (especially one thats held up high) DOES NOT necessarily mean a dog is friendly.

Witnessed some spectacular moments when Bill, the BC from North Wales showed off his speed, accuracy and agility clearing the obstacles and chasing down frisbees. Very impressed with this super lanky fella (you have to check out those gams man!) who is also probably the most authentic BC among those present.

Managed to get Chester started on basic jumpers. We (handler and dog alike) will probably need to get fit and lose some weight. I have to admit that after looking at all the other BCs, Chester wins hands down, being the fattest dog in class! Only consolation was that everyone thought he was really calm (er hell no!) and has a cute face. One of the other owners complimented him on his "good size" (erm never mind what that means) and excellent ball drive that we could tap into to maximise his trainability and potential.

It was great fun although i woke up with sore shoulders and a half-broken back on Sunday morning. A sure sign that i really, really should get back to running and getting fit again.

More on Chester and his progress on doggy sports next week. :)

Oh they do look like they are having fun, don't they??? Does Chester enjoy it?

Sometimes when I asked Toto to run up and down the playground, he does so happily. Other times, he just jumps on me like he's complaining - Eh you, stop it ok!

Hey! So it's really you! :D

Erm, i mean...L mentioned a lady (whose name starts with S but i can't remember what) who lived in Aussie before who also has a border collie etc. and he thought we might hit it off cos we have quite a bit in common.

I put 2 and 2 together and kept wondering if the lady L was talking about is Kingsley's mummy, and what a coincidence!

I'll see you soon....take care of the leg.

Autumn -

yeah they sure look like they enjoy it....i think you'll have to show them the carrot at the end of the tunnel and once they know they're in for something good, they will be damn happy.

for chester, because his ball drive is so strong and he follows my hand wherever the ball goes, i was taught to made him jump by leading him with the ball (i'll have to give him the ball after he successfully does a few jumps so he's motivated to continue)!

i think chester was happy jumping cos he gets the ball in the end haha! then slowly he'll just get conditioned (i.e psychoed) into thinking this whole thing is really greaaat fun!

S could refer to shelley, she used to stay in townsville with her Australian Shepard and BC.

or me.. :P

I stayed for 4 yrs in Brisbane.. but didn't have kingsley then... anyway doesn't matter.. guess i'd get the chance to meet up with you then.. another S. kekekekkeke..

kingsley and myself usually are tired out after the class.. and i think that he is having fun too.. after all.. he gets to eat tons of treats!! - i use food on him.. cos he's such a foodie!

i think that they are happy cos at the end of the jumps.. they get really excited and happy.. and all tails waggy.

if you like.. maybe can join us for the dog hash.. I'm sure that Chester will enjoy running off leash.. and with people who wouldn't go, "BIG DOG, BIG DOG!!" ..cos i'm sure he wouldn't be the biggest dog there... wait till you see the ridgebacks and boxers.. :P

Hey....yeah it actually may be Shelley. I was more distracted trying to make sure Chester and the other dogs didn't beat each other up, so didn't really catch the name. :P

yeahh Chester was definitely happy to be around people and other dogs, especially in such a big field where he can amok. :)

tell me more about the dog hash when we meet up...i saw the website and it sounds like good fun (and it'll be good to be in the company of bigger dogs cos chester is currently the fattest in class now...sad sial!)
